2018
L’Amore. Fisiologia – Psicologia – Morale is probably the highest level of De Roberto’s ideology, and at same time it may be considered as a turning point in the poetic of this author. De Roberto lives in a Positivist age, and he deeply trusts in the instrument of reason. In this work he aims to demonstrate all the contradictions of love and the egoism of the social life. So, De Roberto arrives to a uneasy Positivism, which is focused not only on the “how” of the phenomena, but also to the “why”. Under this point of view, De Roberto’s relativism is similar to that one of Pirandello, and it announces the incoming Modernism. Even if it is impossible to join the truth, De Roberto doesn’t quit …

The architecture of the first garages of Valencia
2014
John Lehmann’s New Writing: The Duty to Be Tormented
2011
John Lehmann’s magazine New Writing, launched in 1936, may be said to give literary historians a slow-motion image of the evolution of artistic consciousness in one of the most turbulent periods of the twentieth century. Throughout the fourteen years of its existence, encompassing the Spanish Civil War and the Second World War, the magazine covers a neglected period of transition in the evolution of modernism. Through his editorial policy and a susceptible interpretation of the Zeitgeist, Lehmann voices the particular torments of his generation, too young to have participated in the First World War, but deeply affected by it. The magazine constitutes an attempt to change the role and social…
Ivy and Bones: ruins and reversibility during the Blitz
2012
"Ivy and bones: ruins and reversibility during the Blitz" examines how the representation of the ruins of the Blitz is informed by the aesthetic and semiotic tension between abstraction, modernist purity and picturesque accretion. Subsequently building on the notion of reversibility, it explores the way wartime destruction and/or cultural decline is recorded as well as counteracted and compensated for in works by Elizabeth Bowen, Herbert Furst, Claire Leighton, Rose Macaulay, John Piper, and Virginia Woolf. The trope of reversibility provides a template to consider some of the sites where aesthetic conflicts are re-enacted, from blitzed spaces to the printed page as threatened modernist art…
Monoscopic Photogrammetry to Investigate the Buildings in the Period of Modernism in Salerno: The Case Study of Torquato Tasso High School
2021
The city of Salerno and the expansion that underwent in the 1920s in order to respond to the urban expansion following the demographic increase that occurred at the beginning of the century will be the topics discussed in this paper. Transformations that created a face to the city that, in its forms, although not linked to the most advanced avant-garde, represent a testimony of the new characteristics of the “modern” city. Within this evolutionary process of the province of Salerno there is the 1928 project of two engineers, Michele and his son Luigi De Angelis for the construction of the “Regio” School. In a first moment, several projects found in the archives refer mainly to the various l…
Towards (dis)continuity of agricultural wetlands: Latvia’s polder landscapes after Soviet productivism
2017
The concepts of agricultural regimes in advanced economies, such as productivism or non/neo/post-productivism, have been critically debated over the last decades to understand the transition and diversity of modern agriculture. We explore these concepts to understand the environmentally vulnerable landscape of agricultural wetlands in Latvia that, during the era of Soviet high modernism (productivist agricultural regime), have been converted into polders as part of a mass drainage movement. Today, these post-Soviet agro-polders can be characterised as antipodes in relation to integrity of heritage, ecology and the socio-economics of agricultural concerns. Building on case studies, wider pol…
